Welcome to Biol 7901: AI in Biology Research and Education
Instructors: Gaurav Kandlikar, Sydney Moyo, Maryrose Weatherton
Time and location: Fall Semester 2026, Wednesdays, 11.30am-12.20pm, in LSA A663
Overview: Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently a hot topic in higher education, research spaces, and society. In this seminar, we will explore and discuss the current landscape of AI use in biological research and biology education. Each week, students will lead a discussion on a recent peer-reviewed article related to artificial intelligence. Potential discussion topics include:
- Use and implications of AI in data collection and analysis
- Use and implications of AI in manuscript preparation
- How students and instructors are currently using AI in STEM courses, and what this might mean for student learning outcomes
- Specific applications of AI to various research areas
- Regulation of AI use in STEM education
A complementary seminar will be offered in Spring 2027 to synthesize discussion points from the fall semester and work to craft a research product (e.g., research manuscript, opinion article). Instructor approval required prior to enrollment; please fill out the google form below to express your interest.
